Head-to-head: Ochsenhausen and Düsseldorf in comparison

The grand finale of the German Table Tennis League (TTBL) is just over two weeks away: TTF Liebherr Ochsenhausen and Borussia Düsseldorf will meet in the Süwag Energie ARENA in Frankfurt on June 15. In this head-to-head, we take a look at the finalists - and Timo Boll's last professional match.

The direct comparison

TTF Liebherr Ochsenhausen and Borussia Düsseldorf have faced each other twice so far this season, each time with the Swabians coming out on top. In the first leg, the individual victories of Shunsuke Togami (3:1 against Borgar Haug, 3:0 against Timo Boll) and Hugo Calderano (3:0 against Boll) ensured a 3:1 win, while only Anton Källberg (3:0 against Simon Gauzy) scored for Borussia. The second leg was a little tighter, with the TTF celebrating a 3:2 win in Düsseldorf. Gauzy (3:2 against Kay Stumper, 3:0 against Boll) and the doubles team of Tiago Abiodun/Leonardo Iizuka (3:1 against Källberg/Haug) were successful for Ochsenhausen, Boll (3:1 against Abiodun) and Källberg (3:0 against Iizuka) for the record champions. A sign for the Liebherr TTBL final? “In my eyes, it doesn't matter at all,” says Gauzy: "There was no duel in which both teams played completely. Regardless of that, we know that we can also win against Düsseldorf's best team, which is undoubtedly very strong."

The teams

Concentrated world class will be at the table in the Süwag Energie ARENA on June 15. Five players from the top 50 in the world rankings will be taking part in the Liebherr TTBL final: Calderano (3), who recently won silver at the World Championships, Togami (20) and Gauzy (35) for Ochsenhausen, Qiu (12) and Källberg (15) for Düsseldorf. Plus, of course, Timo Boll: The 44-year-old table tennis superstar will be playing the last match of his unique career and will be aiming for his 15th German team championship. The players of both teams already shone in the TTBL main round: Calderano (17:1) had the second-best record behind Dimitrji Ovtcharov (TTC RhönSprudel Fulda-Maberzell, 22:5); Källberg (18:3), Togami (18:5), Gauzy (17:5) and Qiu (13:1) also had clearly positive records.

The coaches

Danny Heister has been in charge as coach at Borussia Düsseldorf for 15 years and has led the record champions to numerous successes during this time. Three Champions League titles (2011, 2018, 2021), one ETTU Cup title (2012), nine cup wins (2011, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2021, 2024) and eleven championships (2011, 2012, 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2021, 2022, 2023, 2024) are to his credit. Bogdan Pugna has been in charge at TTF since the start of the season and celebrated a major success in his first stint as coach: In January, Ochsenhausen lifted the German Table Tennis Cup in the Liebherr Cup Final Four - on June 15, Pugna and his team will now even have the chance to win the double.

The road to the Liebherr TTBL final

After a two-year dry spell, Düsseldorf has once again been the dominant team in the TTBL for almost five years: the record champions have won the German championship four times in a row and now have a total of 34 triumphs in the TTBL. Borussia also finished the main round of the current season in first place - with 32:12 points, Boll and Co. finished just ahead of Ochsenhausen, who had the same number of points. In the play-off semi-finals, Düsseldorf beat TSV Bad Königshofen (3:1, 3:2), while the TTF triumphed brilliantly against 1. FC Saarbrücken TT. The Swabians dispatched the Champions League winners and runners-up twice with 3:0.

The titles

When it comes to trophies, Borussia Düsseldorf is the measure of all things: 34 championships, 28 cup wins, 3 Champions League titles - 78 major titles in total make the record champions one of the most successful sports clubs in Germany. But the TTF can also look back on numerous triumphs: four German championships (1997, 2000, 2004, 2019), five cup victories (2002, 2003, 2004, 2019, 2025) and two ETTU Cup titles (1996, 1997) already adorn the letterhead.
