Anders Lind scores twice as Dortmund wins in Bad Homburg
TTC OE Clarity-Telefonie Systeme Bad Homburg suffered a narrow 1:3 home defeat against Borussia Dortmund on the 17th match day of the Table Tennis Bundesliga (TTBL). Despite strong performances and two highly competitive five-set matches, the points went to the visitors, who were able to hold their own in the close race for the playoff spots.
Right from the start, the match took on a decisive character. Csaba Andras fought an intense five-set duel with his compatriot Adam Szudi, which was on a knife edge for long stretches. Andras secured the first set 11-6, but then fell behind 1-2. In the fourth set, he showed nerves of steel, winning it 13-11 and forcing a showdown. But there, the Dortmund player had the better moments on his side. Szudi secured the deciding set 11-9 and with it the important first singles match for the visitors.
Bad Homburg's head coach Helmut Hampl summed up the match accordingly: “For us, the first game was the decisive one. If we had won the first game, we would have had a good chance of reaching the final doubles match – and anything is possible in doubles.” Instead of taking the lead, the hosts fell behind.
Dortmund extends its lead
In the second singles match, Anders Lind increased the lead to 2-0 with a 3-1 victory over Ivor Ban (6-11, 11-5, 11-4, 11-4). After losing the first set, the Dortmund player won the next three sets with ease, putting his team in a comfortable position.
The hosts now had to respond – and they did.
Yokotani narrows the gap for Bad Homburg
Jo Yokotani ensured that Bad Homburg stayed in the game. With a 3-0 victory over Kristian Karlsson (17-15, 11-9, 11-8), he reduced the deficit to 1-2. The first set in particular was fiercely contested and set the stage for an exciting match, with the final doubles still within reach.
It was a special duel for Karlsson: in the previous season, he was still in the host team's line-up. Despite the defeat, he was satisfied with the overall result: “The 3-1 today was two important points for us. I only played for Bad Homburg for a year, but today it felt a bit like coming home.”
Lind wins the second five-set duel
Once again, it went the full distance when Csaba Andras faced Anders Lind in the fourth singles match. Andras fought back after losing the first set and led 6-3 in the deciding set. But Lind turned the match around and won 11-8 – his second victory of the day and the final point of the encounter.
Two points with different weight
For Dortmund, the two points are an important step in the close race for the playoff spots after their recent setbacks. Bad Homburg, on the other hand, missed the chance to pull further away from the bottom of the table, but once again demonstrated the quality and fighting spirit of their young team.
