Nowitzki travels to Boll's farewell: “I feel super honored”
The NBA legend, a good friend of the retiring star, is flying in especially in his honor.
A high-profile farewell visit: basketball icon Dirk Nowitzki will travel from the USA for Timo Boll's retirement. The outgoing table tennis idol confirmed this in a Dyn media round table at the presentation of the documentary “Timo Boll - The Last Serve”. “With Dirk, I know he's coming,” said the 44-year-old: “That's why I feel super honored that he came especially for my last international match and that he's now flying in especially for what will really be my very last match.”
The two stars of German sport have been close friends for years, and Nowitzki (46) had already experienced Boll's international farewell at the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris up close. Among other things, he also discussed the decision to end his career with him. “I often talked to him about what comes next, how it feels and when the right moment is,” said Boll. He had already announced a vacation together after his retirement some time ago.
Boll did not want to comment on other prominent guests - and in some cases was unable to do so. "I haven't really been told. There are still a few surprises in store for me," said Boll. In addition to Nowitzki, however, he is looking forward to “many other friends who mean a lot to me and who have accompanied me throughout my career”.
At his very last appearance in the final of the German Table Tennis League (TTBL) on June 15 in Frankfurt, when Boll and Borussia Düsseldorf fight for the title again against TTF Ochsenhausen, the surroundings will therefore also play a role: “It will be nice and not easy for me to play in front of the crowd.”
