TTC OE Bad Homburg has become the seventh and second-to-last team to secure a spot in the quarterfinals of the German Table Tennis Cup. On Friday evening, the team from Taunus clinched a 3-2 victory in the Round of 16 against second-division club TTC Lampertheim. Now, only one more win stands between Bad Homburg and a place in the prestigious Liebherr Cup Final Four.
It was no easy task for Bad Homburg. The Bundesliga newcomers went the distance against their lower-league opponents, but managed to book their ticket to the next round after a 3-2 win. The quarterfinals are now within reach, and Bad Homburg can start dreaming of the Liebherr Cup Final Four. Already tomorrow, Saturday, September 21, Bad Homburg will be back in action, hosting TSV Bad Königshofen in the Wingert Sports Hall as part of the 4th matchday of the Bundesliga.
Kristian Karlsson had to show nerves of steel for Bad Homburg. With his team trailing 1-2, the Swedish star stepped up in the top singles match against Navid Shams, delivering a 3-1 victory (11:4, 5:11, 11:9, 11:2) and keeping his team in the match. Karlsson’s win sent the tie into the deciding doubles, where Yuma Tsuboi and Benno Oehme impressed with a 3-0 (12:10, 11:3, 11:7) win over Martin Buch Andersen and Alvaro Gainza, securing Bad Homburg’s spot in the next round.
Before Karlsson’s clutch win, he had already secured Bad Homburg’s first victory of the night, defeating Gainza 3-1 (11:3, 7:11, 11:4, 11:8). Lampertheim struck first, with Shams edging out Benno Oehme 3-2 (6:11, 12:10, 11:8, 11:13, 11:9) in the opening match. Martin Buch Andersen followed up with a 3-1 win (11:7, 12:10, 5:11, 11:4) over Yuma Tsuboi.
The final quarterfinal spot will be determined on Saturday, September 21, in a clash between TTC RhönSprudel Fulda-Maberzell and defending champion Borussia Düsseldorf. The match will be broadcast live on Dyn. So far, TSV Bad Königshofen, SV Werder Bremen, ASC Grünwettersbach, 1. FC Saarbrücken TT, TTF Liebherr Ochsenhausen, and second-division side 1. FC Köln have already advanced to the quarterfinals. These teams are now just one step away from participating in the Liebherr Cup Final Four, set to take place in January 2025, with the semifinals and the grand final all happening on one day.
