A third division team and three teams from the second division can look forward to highlight matches against teams from the German Table Tennis League (TTBL). In the preliminary round of the cup, SU Neckarsulm, TTC OE Bad Homburg, TTC indeland Jülich and TV Hilpoltstein prevailed and are in the round of 16 of the German Table Tennis Cup.
Last year, SU Neckarsulm narrowly missed out on making it into the main draw, but this year the third-division club has managed to pull off a sensation. In Group 4 of the preliminary round of the cup, the third league team left the competition behind and thus secured a place in the round of 16 - and with it a highlight match against a team from the German Table Tennis League (TTBL). Neckarsulm will face Post SV Mühlhausen in the battle for a place in the last eight.
Neckarsulm defeated the second division promoted TTC SR Hohenstein-Ernstthal 3:2 on Sunday and thus laid the foundation for the group victory. Julian Mohr and Albert Vilardell kept the upper hand against Nick Neumann-Manz and Johann Koschmieder in the doubles, before that Florian Bluhm and Vilardell had won their singles. After further victories against Hertha BSC (3:0) and TTC Bietigheim-Bissingen (3:1), the coup was achieved.
TV Hilpoltstein did it particularly well in Group 3. In front of their home crowd, the Middle Franconians secured the group win with three 3-0 victories ahead of TTC Fortuna Passau, TTC Lampertheim and TV Leiselheim. Hilpoltstein will now face ASV Grünwettersbach in the round of 16.
The other two open spots in the main round went to two ex-TTBL teams: TTC OE Bad Homburg beat SV Union Velbert (3:1), BV Borussia Dortmund (3:0) and TTC Altena (3:0) in Group 1; TTC indeland Jülich remained unchallenged in Group 2 against 1. FC Köln (3:0), TTS Borsum (3:0) and SV Union Velbert II (3:1). Bad Homburg will receive 1. FC Saarbrücken TT in the round of 16, Jülich will play TTC Zugbrücke Grenzau.
