Timo Boll to captain a team at the “Celebrity Table Tennis World Cup”

German table tennis legend Timo Boll is returning to the table – albeit just for a TV show. The former world number one will be one of four team captains at the “Celebrity Table Tennis World Cup”, as announced by the German Table Tennis Association (DTTB). The show will take place in Düsseldorf and air on ProSieben on 12 December at 8:15 p.m. CET.

The professional players leading the other teams, each featuring three celebrity amateurs, have yet to be revealed by the DTTB. Among the celebrities taking part are sports commentator Frank Buschmann and TV presenter Panagiota Petridou. In addition to traditional doubles and mixed doubles matches, the competition will also feature challenges such as trick shots.

“Almost everyone has stood at a table tennis table at some point – whether in the schoolyard, in the park or in their own basement,” said Boll. He was delighted that the broadcaster was giving him and his fellow participants the opportunity to inspire a broad audience with the finer details of this fantastic sport through an entertainment show.

Boll, 45, ended his long and successful professional career in June 2025. Since then, he has taken on various ambassadorial roles, including for his club Borussia Düsseldorf, Bundesliga football club Borussia Dortmund and several companies. In a recent interview with German newspaper Die Welt, he revealed that an injury to his left wrist had kept him from picking up a table tennis racket for an entire year at one point.
