Matchday 6: Borussia top clash in Düsseldorf, relegation battle in Bergneustadt

Matchday 6 of the TTBL is coming up. This time the fixtures are spread over a whole month. It kicks off on Friday, 25 September; the matchday concludes on 2 November. Three matches will be played before a longer break, three afterward. Can Borussia Düsseldorf defend its position at the top of the table? And who will manage a small breakthrough at the bottom?

ASC Grünwettersbach – TTC Zugbrücke Grenzau

TTC Zugbrücke Grenzau secured big points in the relegation battle last Monday in their home match against TSV Bad Königshofen. New signing Liam Pitchford made his debut after a long injury layoff and contributed two points straight away. The doubles pair Allegro/Kubik fought off a match point against Steger/Bertelsmeier and won the match. Waiting for the team from the Westerwald is a table neighbor, ASC Grünwettersbach. Head coach Kilian Ort's team is also riding a wave of momentum into the match. In doubles, the Karlsruhe side managed to beat SV Werder Bremen – a small coup that once again shows how evenly matched the league is. ASC coach Kilian Ort: "I think both teams will be hoping for points from this match this season. We're looking forward to a good game, and hopefully our loud ASC fans will carry us to victory. Personally, I'm looking forward to seeing my former teammate Martin Allegro again."

1. FC Saarbrücken-TT – TSV Bad Königshofen

After the 2:3 defeat in Grenzau, TSV Bad Königshofen must travel away again — this time to the Saarland state capital. Coach Wang Zhi's team took the field for their away match in Ochsenhausen severely weakened. Calderano, Franziska, Ionescu, Robles – all of them were missing. Instead, the young guns got their chance. Saarbrücken lost 0:3. The average age of the squad around Vilardell, Faso, and Arpas was just 19.3 years — a figure that TSV Bad Königshofen, with veterans Daniel Habesohn and Bastian Steger, will struggle to undercut. With a record of 6:4, Saarbrücken are sitting fairly comfortably, while the Franconians, at 2:8, are under considerably more pressure. TSV manager Andy Albert: "We're going to scratch and claw! The unfortunate defeat in Grenzau stung all of us. We're not without a chance in Saarbrücken!"

Borussia Düsseldorf – Borussia Dortmund

With 10:0 points, Düsseldorf have made a perfect start to the season. In doing so, the Rhinelanders have dropped only two singles matches: one against Bad Königshofen and one against Bergneustadt. "We obviously want to defend our spot at the top of the table. Dortmund are a strong team, and we need to be fully switched on from the start. With our fans behind us, we want to take the next step," says Düsseldorf coach Danny Heister. Borussia Dortmund, led by German young star Wim Verdonschot (record 4:1), have also made a good start to the season. With a 6:4 record, the Black-and-Yellows currently sit in third place. In addition, the team reached the Cup Final Four in Neu-Ulm. That puts BVB right on track, even though there was a defeat in Fulda at the last matchday.

TTC Schwalbe Bergneustadt – Post SV Mühlhausen

Matchday six brings a relegation clash in Bergneustadt. Both teams certainly pictured their season starting differently. Bergneustadt and Mühlhausen each have only one win to their name and, due to a worse game ratio compared to Bad Königshofen, currently sit in the relegation zone. Bergneustadt won 3:2 against Fulda-Maberzell, while Mühlhausen won by the same score against Grünwettersbach. Post SV coach Erik Schreyer said after the 0:3 defeat to Düsseldorf on Tuesday: "We've now got a month off. In November and December we need to show a different face, otherwise it's going to be a very, very hairy year for us."

TTC RhönSprudel Fulda-Maberzell – TTF Liebherr Ochsenhausen

For some, the strong form the "Ochsen" have shown so far might come as a surprise. But new signings Daniel Berzosa and Darius Movileanu have impressed. With Shunsuke Togami, the team from Baden-Württemberg also has an international top player in their ranks. With 10:0 points, Ochsenhausen currently sit in second place and won their last two matches convincingly 3:0, even without star player Togami. Fulda-Maberzell started the season with three narrow 2:3 defeats but has since picked up two wins, against TTC Zugbrücke Grenzau and Borussia Dortmund. For the Hessians, Dimitrij Ovtcharov remains an important cornerstone with a 5:1 record. That puts the German national player in third place on the TTBL rankings, behind Csaba Andras and Fan Zhendong.

TTC OE Clarity-Tel.Syst.Bad Homburg – SV Werder Bremen

After a strong start to the season with three wins and only one defeat (against record champions Düsseldorf), SV Werder Bremen eased off a bit in their match against ASC Grünwettersbach and — surprisingly, even for Dyn commentator Dennis Heinemann — gave up the points to the team from Karlsruhe. With 6:4 points, the Hanseatic side currently sit in fifth place, four places above their matchday-six opponents, TTC OE Clarity-Tel.Syst.Bad Homburg. The Hessians have the TTBL's top player, Csaba Andras (record 7:2), in their ranks. In three of their five matches, TTC have had to go to the doubles decider, losing twice and winning once. Speaking of doubles: last season this fixture also went to the doubles twice. Bremen won both matches with the pairing Karlsson/Bertrand, who remain a strong doubles team this year as well.
