The last remaining spot for the Leapmotor Cup Grand Opening has been filled: ASC Grünwettersbach II defeated 1. FC Saarbrücken TT II 3–1 in the cup preliminary round, thereby completing the field in Nuremberg. The new event format will be held for the first time this coming weekend (August 29–30) at the Kia Metropol Arena. Tickets are still available.

With ASC Grünwettersbach II’s victory, the 16 teams that will compete in the round of 16 and quarterfinals of the German Table Tennis Cup in Nuremberg have now been determined. In addition to the twelve clubs from the Table Tennis Bundesliga (TTBL), SV Union Velbert, SV Union Velbert II, TTC immoXone Bietigheim-Bissingen, and now the Grünwettersbach reserves have qualified through the cup preliminary round.

In Sunday’s showdown between the TTBL reserve teams, Tom Jarvis proved to be Grünwettersbach II’s decisive weapon. The 26-year-old, who had played in the number one spot for ASC during the first two TTBL matchdays, won both of his matches against Saarbrücken II. Jarvis defeated both Dennis Klein and Albert Vilardell 3–0. Vilardell had tied the score at 1–1 with a 3–0 victory over Florian Blum. In the third spot, Tobias Hippler secured a 3–2 win over Danilo Faso. At the Leapmotor Cup Grand Opening, they will now face SV Union Velbert II.

Expected to attend the Leapmotor Cup Grand Opening are, among others, Olympic champions Fan Zhendong and Dang Qiu (both from Borussia Düsseldorf), Hugo Calderano and Patrick Franziska (both from 1. FC Saarbrücken TT), Dimitrij Ovtcharov (TTC RhönSprudel Fulda-Maberzell), and Shunsuke Togami (TTF Liebherr Ochsenhausen). Matches will be played on Saturday in two sessions starting at 11 a.m. and 3 p.m., running simultaneously on four tables; on Sunday, the quarterfinals will follow in two sessions on two tables. The four winning teams will ultimately qualify for the Liebherr Cup Final4.
